Why is soil health important?

Along with water, sunlight, and the atmosphere, soil plays a key role in maintaining ecosystem stability, including crop health and productivity.

🚜 Maintaining soil health is one of the most important steps in ensuring proper plant growth and the development of the agricultural sector.

💧 Healthy soil is characterized by specific properties that support plant life and growth, including:

  • adequate stability provided by minerals, organic matter, and biological agents that bind these aggregates,

  • a stable structure with pores between soil particles,

  • a highly developed network of roots and soil microorganisms,

  • the ability to retain water and nutrients,

  • the ability to adapt to changing conditions.

🦠 Soil is inextricably linked to the microorganisms present in it. Soil quality depends on its activity, and its proper functioning depends on the soil’s structure.

1️⃣ Soil with the right structure provides microorganisms with habitats rich in nutrients, moisture, and oxygen.

2️⃣ In turn, microorganisms break down dead organic matter, produce organic “glues” that bind soil particles into larger structures, and increase the availability of minerals.

🌾 This mutually beneficial relationship beneath our feet allows plants to send their shoots upward and sink their roots into this incredible network of connections, ultimately leading to bountiful harvests.
