Relationships hidden in the soil

The soil metabolome is the complete set of metabolites found in the soil as a result of organic matter decomposition, root activity, and the activity of microorganisms.
🌾 It can be said that soil is a living structure in which the specific interactions between soil organisms shape the environment. What impact do these interactions have?
they provide insight into soil condition and ecosystem health,
they influence the quantity and type of metabolites in the soil,
they shape the circulation of elements,
they support plant health.
đź’§ As many as seven processes are involved in shaping the soil metabolome, on which soil fertility and function depend:
Production of root exudates that attract microorganisms.
Uptake and release of substances by microorganisms.
Decomposition of dead organic matter.
Formation of litter.
The binding of organic compounds by the soil.
Uptake of substances from the atmosphere to the soil surface.
Transport of organic compounds within the soil profile.
🧫 Soil functioning also depends on abiotic and biotic factors, such as the species composition of microorganisms, temperature, soil structure, and water content.
đźšś Studying soil metabolomics can promote sustainable agriculture that supports both plants and the vital soil they depend on.
