Plants as the miners of the future

Phytomining is the remarkable ability of certain plants to extract metals from the soil. 


💎 By combining two processes, phytoremediation and bioaccumulation, phytomining not only reduces environmental degradation but also facilitates the recovery of valuable raw materials.

How it works ❓


1️⃣ Some plants can hyperaccumulate metals:

  • Alyssum and Thlaspi absorb nickel from the soil,  

  • cruciferous plants accumulate selenium and cadmium,

  • Pteris vittata (Chinese fern) and Viola arsenica (violet) absorb arsenic.


2️⃣ The absorbed metals are stored in plant tissues, and in some species, their content can account for up to 1.5% of dry weight!


🔗 This unconventional method of metal extraction combines ecological and economic benefits, blurring the lines between these two areas.


🌿 From an ecological standpoint, plants purify the soil, protecting it from excessive contamination. Additionally, this method does not require intensive interference with the natural environment.


⚗️ From an economic perspective, it allows for the relatively simple extraction of metals that play a vital role in industry and possess unique chemical properties.
