đź“– Research published in The Crop Journal by Li et al. has opened new perspectives on understanding root responses to nitrogen at the cellular level through the use of single-cell transcriptomics.Â
🧬 Single-cell transcriptomics involves studying gene activity in cells based on RNA analysis, providing detailed insight into gene expression.Â
🔎 Examining individual cells from the root tips of corn in response to varying nitrate concentrations revealed the following:
cellular diversity - as many as 11 distinct cell/tissue types with unique characteristics and functions,Â
nitrate-responsive genes - 85 nitrate-responsive genes were identified in various cells,
sites of nitrate uptake and assimilation - the genes are most active in epidermal cells and the meristematic zone.Â
đźšś These findings may help optimize nitrogen fertilization, increase crop productivity, and pave the way toward sustainable agriculture.Â
